Independent Spirit Award Nominations 2012

The ISA  nominations have been released and the announcement officially opens awards season.  Whether you care about awards or not, it’s that time of year again– the time to seriously talk film, write about film and see  films, and not the blockbuster popcorn type.  You can catch all of the information on the Independent Spirit Awards at  SpiritAwards.com   Here are some of this years nominees.

BEST FEATURE:

  • Beast of the Southern Wild.  Directed by Benh Zeitlin, and featuring a remarkable performance by Quvenzhané Wallis, Beasts tells the the story of a six year old girl in New Orleans who must  learn to survive unstoppable catastrophes of epic proportions.
  • Bernie.  Richard Linklater directed this black comedy starring Jack Black, Shirley MacLaine and Matthew McConaughey about an 81 year old millionairess murdered by her younger companion.
  • Keep the Lights On.  Keep the Lights On,  chronicles an emotionally and sexually charged journey of two men in New York City through love, friendship, and addiction.  Directed by Ira Sachs
  • Moonrise Kingdom.  Wes Anderson’s romantic comedy follows the courtship of two weird, intense and wonderful kids in this beautiful film with great performances by Jared Gilman and Kara Hayward as well as an a-list supporting cast.
  • Silver Linings Playbook.  Director David O. Russell directed one of the most talked about films of the year, starring Bradley Cooper, Robert DeNiro and Jennifer Lawrence about the return home of a former teacher who has been institutionalized following a mental breakdown.
