HBO is Going Cordless. Cable Cordless That Is.

In a move that could change broadcasting, HBO announced today that they be the first major network to offer stand-alone streaming service in 2015. This is the next step in the move to cutting the cable cord, as currently you would have to be a cable or FIOS subscriber to use the popular HBO streaming service, HBO Go.

HBO Chairman and CEO Richard Plepler made the announcement during today’s Time Warner Inc Investor Meeting, noting that growing number of broadband-only homes (10 million and counting) and those who don’t have any cable access at all. ‘That is a large and growing opportunity that should no longer be left untapped’, Plepler stated during the meeting. ‘It is time to remove all barriers to those who want HBO’. Plepler also add that ‘there are 80 million homes that do not have HBO and we will use all means at our disposal to go after them’.

In short, if you want access to unfiltered, uncensored shows such as Game Of Throes, Real Time With Bill Maher, Last Week Tonight With John Oliver, or see the return of The Comeback, True Detective and The Newsroom, or any of the award-winning original films, documentaries and sports programming without signing up with cable provider, you will have a chance to do so in 2015.

This is big. Whose next?
