Get to Know a Few of the Funniest Comedians in Canada; SiriusXM Top Comic Finalists!

SiriusXM top comic canada

This week, one of North America’s funniest cities- Toronto- is even funnier than usual.  The city is overflowing with comedy as the funniest people on the continent have converged in Toronto for the JFL42 Comedy Festival. There are international headliners, local comedy greatness and one of the biggest events of the week is the SiriusXM Top Comic finale taking place Thursday night at the Queen Elizabeth Theatre.

The annual competition combs all of Canada in search of best comedic talent over the course of five months. This is the contest’s seventh year, and it’s bigger than ever. Hundreds of comics from across Canada registered for the competition in April, 72 contestants were selected to compete at the Toronto and Vancouver auditions across six nights in June, and judges then selected 18 semi-finalists to participate in a Canada-wide online vote. Now the eight comics with the most votes advance to the finale and they’re competing for a $25,000 check, three guaranteed spots at 2017: JFL42 in Toronto, JFL NorthWest in Vancouver and the Just for Laughs Festival in Montreal and a televised spot on JFL: All Access special airing on The Comedy Network.

The finale is hosted by SiriusXM’s Ben Miner, and headlined by Canadian comedy icon Tom Green. It’s going to be a night not to be missed, but even if you can’t be there, get to know these eight up and coming comics. Canada has produced some of the funniest people who have ever lived and there’s no reason to think that’s going to stop any time soon.

What comedian or comedians are your favorites- the people you saw and said- that’s what I want to do?
The Smothers Brothers were so funny. I love their records. Then I found out they lost their TV show because of their anti-Vietnam war stance, and that made me love them even more. Then I got to open for them and they were so nice to me. Also, Janeane Garofalo was the first person I saw doing comedy who I thought was cool, she had a notebook and that blew my mind. So I like polished and not polished.

I don’t wanna say because they might think they’re famous, and then I say this and then they’ll feel sad.

Julia Hladkowicz, Toronto, ON

What’s your go-to place in Toronto?
I love going to Bellwoods Brewery. They have the best craft beer in the city, really great food and an amazing patio. It’s also so cozy inside in the winter. If I was Frasier Crane this would be my Cafe Nervosa…or more like my Cheers. I go there so much everyone knows me. Does this mean I have a drinking problem?

What club do you consider your home club?
Probably the Yuk Yuk’s downtown Toronto club. I’ve performed there more often than any other club in Canada. If I had to choose my favourite room though, it would be the ALTdot Comedy Lounge at the Rivoli. That place feels like home.

Favorite music groups right now?

Tim Gilbert, Dylan Gott, Rory Scovel. Steph Tolev makes me laugh more than any human, on stage and off. She also scares the shit out of me 😉

What’s your comedy goal? Is it arena tours? Television? Theater? Touring clubs? A giant special? Getting on a late night television show?
ALL OF THE ABOVE. I’d like to be a touring stand-up, be a lead in a TV series, star in movies, write a children’s cartoon, fizzle out and do Dancing with the Stars, have an epic comeback and then get to a point where everyone expects me to write a super cool book that is a bestseller.

I just binge watched so much. Nashville, How to Get Away with Murder, The Good Wife. I’m obsessed with the show, Damages. Glenn Close is better than any of us will ever be.

Chris Robinson, Toronto, ON

What’s your favorite place to go in Toronto?
Fave place in the city is a tie between Pizza Gigi and Jerk King. The food is so good, you will return despite the bad customer service.

What club do you consider your home club?
My home club is The Corner Comedy Club at Queen and John. It’s my favourite place to try out new material in the city.

How is the comedy scene in Toronto different from others?
Toronto’s comedy scene is different because we don’t have producers and television executives coming out to shows as much as they would in New York or LA. So, Toronto comics don’t focus on getting on TV. They focus on getting good as their priority.

What did you eat for breakfast today?
Today, I ate a bowl of Honey Nut Cheerios and a glass of Wheatgrass juice.

Who is your favorite comic who isn’t famous?
Favourite comic who isn’t famous is Me. Paul Thompson is sick too.
