Gender Discrimination Claims Shut Down Father-Daughter Dances and Mother-Son Sports Games
A claim brought by the ACLU has shut down the traditional “Father-Daughter Dance” and “Mother-Son Sports Events” in a Rhode Island school district. The claim argued that to assume daughters would prefer to attend a dance, and sons would prefer to attend a ballgame is gender discrimination. The change was instituted months ago, but is now getting media attention. The ACLU released a statement on the decision:
“Public schools have no business fostering the notion that girls prefer to go to formal dances while boys prefer baseball games. The time has long since passed for public school resources to encourage stereotyping from the days of Ozzie and Harriet. Not every girl is interested in growing up to be Cinderella, not even in Cranston.This type of stereotyping is contrary to federal law.”
