Gary Gulman’s highly anticipated new special, The Great Depresh, will premiere on HBO October 5, HBO announced today. The 75 minute special will air at 10pm E/PT.
The hour taped in Roulette Intermedium in Brooklyn over the Summer and sold out almost immediately after the taping was announced. It was something of a comeback for Gulman who almost quit comedy during a legit and substantial battle with depression.
Michael Bonfiglio directed the special which he called “as moving and empowering as it is hilarious.”
Prior to taking a year off to move back home, Gulman had been on an impressive Career trajectory. His breakout hour “Gary Gulman: Boyish Man,” debuted in 2006, followed by “Gary Gulman: In This Economy?” in 2012 and in 2016 “Gary Gulman: It’s About Time” was considered brilliant by comedians and critics. Gulman is the consummate joke writer, and his last hour had everyone awestruck by his incredible mastery of language.
The new hour premieres on the eve of Mental Illness Awareness Week, featuring Gulman speaking about mental health issues in a way that is both entertaining and poignant, mixed with short documentary interludes that provide insight into the comedian’s own mental health journey. Tackling the difficult subject of depression and aiming to destigmatize an issue that affects countless lives through his relatable comedy, Gulman shares that he spent years trying to hide his depression from those closest to him, and details the extensive and sometimes radical treatments he’s undertaken in his journey of getting well. By talking about his mental health struggles, he hopes to help others feel more comfortable, less afraid and most importantly, less alone.
Gulman also offers his hilarious observations on a number of other topics, including: his admiration for Millennial attitudes toward bullying, masculinity and sports; his love for basketball and why he tried to avoid playing football in high school; menacing TV news theme songs; and how his mother’s voice is always in his head.
GARY GULMAN: THE GREAT DEPRESH is executive produced by Judd Apatow, Jon Kamen, Dave Sirulnick, Meredith Bennett, Neal Marshall, and Brian Stern; produced by Michael Bonfiglio, Josh Church, Gary Gulman; conceived and developed by Michael Bonfiglio, Gary Gulman; written by Gary Gulman; directed by Michael Bonfiglio.
Gulman will also be seen in the upcoming film “Joker,” starring Joaquin Phoenix.
The special will also be available on HBO On Demand, HBO NOW, HBO GO and partners’ streaming platforms.
