Galifianakis is a “Basket” Case. Watch the Trailer for His Bizarre New FX Series

There are few things that evoke more passion from comedians than the subject of clowns. Most of the world seems to have a love/hate relationship with them, which makes the recent offering from Zach Galifianakis all the more awesome. To make matters worse (or better depending on your relationship with clowns) Chip Baskets (Galifianakis) seems to be a REALLY bad clown. The trailer reveals Chip’s attempt at French clowning school, even though he can’t speak French and a myriad of characters from a girlfriend to his own twin brother who just. can’t. even. deal with this clown.

Watching the trailer for Baskets, I wondered out loud “what the hell is this?” Upon further research, I discovered Baskets is executive-produced by co creators Galifianakis, Louis CK and Portlandia’s Jonathan Krisel, and suddenly it all made sense. I imagine those three guys, all currently riding high in their careers throwing a bunch of words into a hat and vowing to make a show based on whatever three words they pulled out. In this case the words were “clowns, France and twin”. I’m not convinced it will be a show embraced by the mainstream the way Portlandia and Louie have, but I have little doubt that was their intention. Comedians love a good challenge, and comedy fans love when powerful comics get to use their name recognition to create out of the box stuff. Kudos, Baskets.

The series premieres Thursday January 21st on FX.
