HBO has greenlit a Spanish language comedy titled “Los Espookys” and it comes from Saturday Night Live’s own Fred Armisen, and Lorne Michaels.
Set in a bizarre alternate version of Mexico City, the half hour series follows a group of friends who take their love of horror and turn it into an unusual business. Bernardo Velasco, Cassandra Ciangherotti, Ana Fabrega and Julio Torres will star in the series, which will be broadcast entirely in Spanish.
Renaldo (Valasco) is the gore-obsessed leader of Los Espookys who is always running out of cell phone minutes, while Ursula (Ciangherotti), a dental assistant loves teeth and provides them for the group’s monsters. Ana Fabrega will play Ursula’s sister Tati, a test dummy for Los Espooky’s who is constantly juggling some peculiar jobs. Julio Torres plays Andres, a dark and mysterious heir to a chocolate empire who has a gorgeous boyfriend. He also happens to be Renaldo’s bestie. Armisen will play Tico, Renaldo’s reliable uncle who lives in L.A. He’s a prodigious valet driver living his dream of parking cars.
Armisen, Torres and Fabrega will write the series and also serve as EPs. Fabrega and Torres are both fierce up and coming talents with impressive resumes. Fabrega was selected as one of JFL’s New Faces in 2017, and the New York Comedy Festival named her one of Comedy Central’s Comics to Watch in 2016. She’s also got a slew of writing and performing tv credits. Torres is a writer for Saturday Night Live and a tremendously talented stage performer- in fact we picked his performance at Austin’s Moontower this year as one of the best moments of the festival.
If you’ve been thinking of brushing up on your Spanish skills, nows the time.
