Self-confessed “Star Trek” fan Neil deGrasse Tyson has publicly admitted he’s been explaining the starship Enterprise’s warp drive incorrectly for years. On the first episode of the Nat Geo TV version of his talk show “Star Talk”, America’s favorite astrophysicist said his explanation makes sense, but it’s not how it works on “Star Trek”.

Dr. Tyson shocked his guests astrophysicist Charles Liu and comedian Leighann Lord when Tyson said he always thought the “Star Trek” warp drive worked on the principle of bending space and the starship traveling through a wormhole. Dr. Liu was disgusted by the inaccurate explanation. Liu, also a Star Trek fan, gave the official explanation saying that the warp drive works by creating a sub-space field or bubble around the Enterprise enabling it to travel faster than light.

Neil deGrasse Tyson said he’s been giving the wrong answer about “Star Trek” for years until he was finally confronted by Trek fans at a confession. He blamed their politeness for his years of giving out bad info.
