Moontower Comedy Festival Must See Shows of 2016

MOONTOWER COMEDY & ODDITY FESTIVAL is back up this month, running from April 20th through the 23. Since its inception in 2012, Moontower has been one of the highlights of the festival year, bringing together an incredible lineup of comedy stars, comics just about to break, and international stars who you might not be familiar with yet. More focused on fans than industry, Moontower also has a reputation for being a comedy summer camp- three days where comics and fans can chill out, enjoy great bbq, drink, and enjoy one the city and the comedy. The venues are all close enough together that you don't need a car if you're staying nearby, adding to the community vibe, the parties are excellent, the ping pong tournament has become legendary but none of that matters without great comedy, and the comedy is always great.

An Oral History of a Buffalo Comedy Institution: Nietzsche’s

In 2006, when Kristen Becker started the Doin' Time Comedy Showcase at Nietzsche's on Allen St. in Buffalo, there were about 8 comics in town and no comedy scene to speak of. Now, 10 years later, Nietzsche's is one room among many. Buffalo has its own club, a Helium. There are open mics and showcases and themed comedy nights and other assorted gigs almost every night of the week, and there are 30, 40, 50, maybe even more comics filling those slots and slinging jokes for love and (sometimes) money. (Sometimes.) But none of it would have been possible if Kristen Becker hadn't started that first open mic in a divey music venue in Allentown.

A Critical Look at Jimmy Fallon’s Tonight Show

Who can even remember the last time The Tonight Show was “cool?” Maybe a few short weeks near the end of Conan O’Brien’s tenure, but that was equal parts sad and mean at the same time, kind of dampening the experience. No, The Tonight Show hasn’t really been “cool” since Johnny Carson left, and even Johnny’s last couple years were getting a little schlocky.

Is the Comedy Club Business Model Outdated? Part 1: Diversity

There has been a lot of talk about the gender divide in comedy for years. While I have been in and around comedy for quite some time, I never crunched the numbers. Earlier this month I spent a weekend going through the websites of four major club chains, and collected data.

Sal Vulcano Hints at Big Moves For Impractical Jokers, Including a Movie and MSG

Sal Vulcano is sitting on top of the world right now. The show he created with lifelong friends, Impractical Jokers has become a worldwide sensation, and they got there by being themselves. Vulcano got together with Brian Quinn, Joe Gatto, and James Murray in high school in 1990, they've been doing improv and sketch together since around 1999. The ascension of YouTube and MySpace inspired them to start doing sketches online, which got them an agent and the chance to start pitching tv shows.

Josh Gondelman Writes For a Huge TV Show, Created a Giant Twitter Persona, Released His New Album on Digital and Cassette…and He’s the Nicest Guy in Comedy

I dare you to describe Josh Gondelman as a comedian or a person without using the word “delightful.” It can’t be done. Josh takes the kind of gentle approach to his set, even when dealing with darker or edgier material, that can keep you comfortable in the audience whether you’re on a first date or taking out with your grandma. He is also unfailingly positive and supportive towards his fellow comedians and a true joy to spend time with off stage.

Julie Delpy’s Comedy Lolo is a Parent’s Nightmare

After two dramadies that fit the “independent film blueprint” (Two Days in New York and Two Days in Paris), Delpy went in a completely different direction with her new comedy Lolo …a farce about a couple who meet cute at a spa (Delpy and Danny Boon)…and the narcissistic psychopath of a son Lolo (Vincent Lacoste) who want to break them up to keep his mother all for himself. Its a French farce.
