Your Guide to the Fall 2014 New TV Comedies

It’s that time of year in television. The networks, premium channels and streaming services are lining up their funniest pilots and looking for a hit. Here’s the schedule for the brand new comedies coming to TV this Fall.


Red Band SocietyFOX, Wednesday, September 17th at 9 pm et

This comedy-drama brings the comedy if you can laugh along with kids facing terminal illnesses. The series is about teenagers stuck in a pediatric ward of hospital facing life threatening situations. The story is told in a voice-over by a kid who’s in a coma, but hears everything going on around him. Octavia Spencer stars as the head pediatric nurse.  Watch the Trailer

Black-ishABC, Wednesday, September 24th at 9:30 pm et

Anthony Anderson plays a successful man living with his family in an affluent and rich white neighborhood. He’s worried that his family is losing its black culture and becoming too gentrified. Lawrence Fishburne co-stars.  Watch the trailer here.

TransparentAmazon, Friday, September 26th

Jeffrey Tambor is back in a new original series from Amazon. He is a man who throws his L.A. family into turmoil as they come to terms with their father being transgender. Along with Tambor, “Transparent” stars Judith Light, Gaby Hoffmann, Amy Landecker and Jay Duplass. All 10 episodes will be available at once on Amazon on September 26th.  Watch the trailer here.

SelfieABC, Tuesday, September 30th at 8 pm et

The new ABC comedy is based on “My Fair Lady” where Karen Gillan plays Eliza Dooley, an internet celebrity, who is getting a social media makeover from her own Henry Higgins, (in this case it’s Henry Higenbottam) played John Cho. She hopes to find more to life than just posting photos online.  Watch the trailer right here.

Manhattan Love StoryABC, Tuesday, September 30th at 8:30 pm et

Analeigh Tipton and Jake McDorman star as couple set up on blind date. He’s a native New Yorker and she’s new to the city. Their story is told through the inner-monologues going on in their minds. It’s a relationship comedy where viewers get to hear every thought.  Watch the trailer for Manhattan Love Story.

Bad JudgeNBC, Thursday, October 2nd at 9 pm et

There’s bad teachers and bad santas, here’s a bad judge. Kate Walsh stars Judge Rebecca Wright whose reckless partying and sexual behavior is about to be tamed by a young boy she’s taking in after she put his parents away. It’s from executive producers Adam McKay and Will Ferrell.  Here’s the trailer for Bad Judge.

A to ZNBC, Thursday, October 2nd at 9:30 pm et

Ben Feldman (Mad Men) and Cristin Milioti (the mother in How I Met Your Mother) play a couple destined to meet. He works for an internet dating site and she’s a lawyer and they both are having trouble finding love. Katey Sagal also stars as the narrator of the story.  Watch the preview for A to Z right here.

Survivor’s RemorseStarz, Saturday, October 4th at 9 pm et

Basketball phenom Cam Calloway deals with his new found success and stardom and his friends who all want a piece of the action.  Watch the preview for Survivor’s Remorse on Starz.

MulaneyFOX, Sunday, October 5th at 9:30 pm et  (editors pick)

John Mulaney stars in one of the most talked about new comedies of the Fall season. He plays a fictionalized version of himself and the show will also include Mulaney stepping out of character to do stand up. In the series, Mulaney finds himself writing jokes for nationally known comic and game show host Lou Cannon played by the brilliant Martin Short. The show also stars Nasim Pedrad, Seaton Smith, Zack Pearlman and Elliott Gould as Oscar the eccentric neighbor. “Mulaney” is executive produced by Lorne Michaels.  Here’s the official trailer for Mulaney.

CristelaABC, Friday, October 10th at 8:30 pm et

Comedian Cristela Alonzo has her own family sitcom on ABC. She plays a student living with her family while going to law school and working an unpaid internship. She’s got hopes and dreams and very little support from her family. Gabriel Iglesias also appears in the recurring role of Alberto.  Watch the trailer for Cristela.

Jane the VirginCW, Monday, October 13th at 9 pm et

Based on a Venezuelan telenovela, Jane played by Gina Rodriguez becomes pregnant despite being a virgin. She was accidentally artificially inseminated due to a mistake by her gynocologist. The comedy-drama is set in Miami.  You can watch the teaser for Jane the Virgin right now.

Marry MeNBC, Tuesday, October 14th at 9 pm et

It’s a return to television for two very funny people, Ken Marino (Party Down) and Casey Wilson (SNL, Happy Endings) star as a couple who cannot get their marriage proposals right. The series also features Tim Meadows and Dan Bucatinsky as the Kevins, the gay dads of Casey Wilson’s character Annie.  Watch the preview for Marry Me here.

The McCarthysCBS, Thursday, October 30th at 9:30 pm et

This Boston based family sitcom is about Ronny McCarthy (Tyler Ritter), the gay son in a close family who goes to work as an assistant for his basketball coach father despite being athletically challenged. Sitcom great Laurie Metcalf (Roseanne) and Jack McGee (Rescue Me) play Ronny’s parents.  Watch the trailer for The McCarthys.

The ComebackHBO, Sunday, November 9th at 10 pm et

It’s been 9 years since we’ve seen Valerie Cherish. HBO is bringing back one of its most critically acclaimed series, The Comeback. Lisa Kudrow stars as Valerie, who was once America’s favorite sitcom star. Nearly a decade ago, she tried to make a new start in reality television with disastrous results. Now the series is back for a six episode run on HBO and we find out what’s she’s been up to while trying to regain the spotlight.  Watch the trailer for The Comeback of the Comeback.

TogethernessHBO, TBA

This is the new HBO comedy series from the Duplass Brothers, Mark and Jay. It’s their first directing and writing project for television. Mark will also star in the series about two couples sharing a home while dealing with making their relationships and friendships work. It also stars Amanda Peet, Melanie Lynskey, and Steve Zissis. “Togetherness” is due this Fall, but no premiere date has been set yet.
