Amber Heard, who is in the middle of a high profile divorce from Johnny Depp, sued Stanhope after an article he authored in defense of Depp appeared on TheWrap.com on May 29th. In the article, Stanhope claimed that he has observed Heard manipulating Depp for years, and that Depp had told him that Heard was threatening to blackmail him. Amber Heard’s lawyers filed suit on or around June 3rd.
Stanhope was careful not to talk too much with Stern about the lawsuit- he does have a lawyer and of course has to be careful that he doesn’t say anything that can be used against him. But one thing he was very comfortable talking about was that he didn’t write the headline that appeared with the article.
“I put it on my website, and the title was, “At a Loss for Words” whatever it was,” Stanhope said. “The Wrap got it as an exclusive- however that worked- and said “Amber Heard is Blackmailing Johnny Depp, This Is How I Know.” I didn’t write that fucking title. I didn’t put that stupid tabloid title in there. I’m a better writer than that. I don’t know if it’s hinged on that. I don’t know how much of it is spite.”
The Wrap was not named in the initial lawsuit, although Heard’s lawyers did name numerous John and Jane Doe defendants to be determined at a later date.
Stanhope also told Stern he did not speak to Depp until after the article was published, but said that Depp thanked him.
Stanhope says he has nothing to be sued for and laughed at “just the idea of some Hollywood super model lady winning all of my shit. She would be locking her doors just driving down my street,” he said adding, “I live on the Mexican border!”
Stern asked, if you’re coming forward with the fact that he told you she was going to do something like this, what is she going to sue over? “I think what she’s trying to do is get me to shut the fuck up.” It worked.
