Do We Really Need Algebra?
New York Times writer Andrew Hackers wrote up a piece asking if Algebra was really necessary to teach in high school and college. One of his main arguments was that some people, who would never use algebra in their daily lives, would fail out of school because they can’t pass the subject. That having them take algebra takes away time from them where they can be doing something in the arts. Another argument is that if you get a job where math is needed, you’re going to learn on that job itself– the exact type of math that needs to be done, and algebra isn’t really helping at all.
