Recipients have included scholars, artists, writers, journalists, philanthropists, and public servants whose work has bolstered the field of African and African American studies.

Awards are given to achievers in every discipline with many artists, academics, and activists making the list each year.  Some past recipients in the entertainment field include LL Cool J, Pam Grier, Harry Belafonte, Steve McQueen, Shonda Rhimes, Oprah Winfrey, and Stephen Spielberg.

A ceremony will take place on October 11 to bestow the honors at Harvard’s Sanders Theater in Memorial Hall.
