Hot on the heels of a Netflix announcement that they locked Chris Rock in for two specials at an unprecedented price, today we’ve learned that Dave Chappelle has signed with Netflix to deliver not two but THREE comedy specials exclusive to the streaming platform. Is Netflix the king of the comedy special? It certainly seems that way. Not only do comics love that their special stays on Netflix forever, and is easy to find, but they can also record without thought of commercials.

If you are wondering how Chappelle can promise three new hours, here’s how this is going to work. Chappelle has two never-before seen specials in his comedy vault, one filmed at Austin City Limits in 2015, and the other filmed at the Hollywood Palladium in 2016. Despite that Chappelle has been touring nonstop for the last three years, selling out record runs of shows including an unprecedented 10 shows in a row at Radio City Music Hall, he has not released any concert specials in 12 years, so this is huge. His last special, For What It’s Worth, was released in 2005.

Then Chappelle is planning to produce an original all new special exclusively for Netflix. The date will be announced.

Chappelle of course, was the mastermind behind the beloved sketch comedy show Chappelle’s Show, one of the highest rated programs on Comedy Central during its run from 2003 to 2005. Chappelle famously left the show suddenly while it was at its peak, despite being offered outlandish sums of money. Just last week, Dave Chappelle hosted Saturday Night Live for the first time ever, grabbing ratings that were a season high for the show.

He’s been called genius and is near the top of any list ranking the best stand up comedians performing today and is well known for his reputation of standing behind his principles including pioneering the use of tech devices to prevent cell phone use during his shows.

Exciting news. Stay tuned for more details.
