Danny McBride Teaming Up with HBO Again, This Time with John Goodman on Board

Danny McBride is developing another pilot for HBO. This is great news since the last two projects McBride did for HBO were two of our favorite comedy series of the decade- Eastbound & Down, and Vice Principals.

“The Righteous Gemstones” follows a world-famous televangelist family– the Gemstones– and their long tradition of charitable greed in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ. Patriarch Eli Gemstone will be played by John Goodman- a powerful force in the evangelist world known for aggressive salvation techniques and a weekly television ministry. Unfortunately, as with most McBride anti-heros, his light is fading but that doesn’t stop him from behaving like he is the king of his universe.

McBride will co-star as the eldest son, Jesse, a ministry maverick and heir to the throne who builds on his father’s successes in a modern world. Sounds like a ministerial Star is Born with a family twist.

The Wrecking Crew is on board too– Jody Hill and David Gordon Green will also executive produce alongside McBride.
