Cristela Alonzo Talks About Her Difficult Upbringing

Last night Cristela had her first appearance on The Late Show with David Letterman and told Letterman about her rough upbringing in a Texas border town. She said she and her mom and three siblings were squatters in an abandoned diner from the time that she was born until she was eight years old. They had no electricity or water, and her mom used to cook on a space heater. Cristela says it wasn’t until she was in her twenties that she realized that she grew up differently from other kids. Later they moved into a small house in a bad neighborhood which meant a lot of staying at home and watching tv. Cristela’s mom was a huge fan of Dave’s even though she didn’t understand any english.
Cristela told Dave that it was her love and respect for her mom that led Cristela to do stand up, because she wanted to tell all the stories about growing up, and stand up was cheaper than therapy.
