Last night, yet another unique late night talk experiences came to an end, as Craig Ferguson hosted his last episode of The Late Late Show.

“Late Late” was the second late night talker to wrap up this week and also the second one to go out with a celebrity filled musical number– well third if you count Chelsea Lately’s last episode earlier this year. Craig Ferguson opened his finale with a rendition of Scottish band Dead Man Fall’s “Bang Your Drum” The music video featured a crateload of celebrities banging on some drums and a few other instruments. Ted Danson, William Shatner, Quentin Tarantino, Justin Long, Matthew McConaughey, Jimmy Kimmel, Tenacious D, Pierce Brosnan, Kat Dennings, Weird Al Yankovic, Michael Sheen, Jon Hamm, Kevin Bacon, Kyra Sedgwick, Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Tony Hale, Betty White, Henry Winkler, Rashida Jones, Cedric the Entertainer, Kristin Chenoweth, Sean Hayes, Jane Lynch, a very pregnant Kristen Bell, Tim Meadows, Samuel L. Jackson, Angela Kinsey, Don Cheadle, Jeff Daniels, Steve Carell, Joel McHale, Ray Romano, Regis Philbin, James Marsden, Larry King, Bob Saget, Archbishop Desmond Tutu and others all helped give Craig a badass send off. The video transitioned to the studio where Craig Ferguson stood loud and proud on his desk singing along with Steve Jones and Bone Patrol, Geoff, and a rocking gospel choir.

Ferguson’s last monologue started with a through-the-years monologue-montage.  Ferguson said that with the show, he wanted to “make something that wasn’t here before” and he hesitantly added, “maybe it is a piece of art”. During the show’s 10 year run, the Late Late Show’s Scottish host became an American citizen and Ferguson said the most overwhelming part of the experience was making a connection with a country that he became a part of.

The final and only guest on the Late Late Show with Craig Ferguson– a man who knows a thing or two about leaving late night talk shows — Jay Leno. Interestingly, the two didn’t reminiscence  fond memories, as much as they commiserated. They talked about having to deal with the networks, publicists and guests they couldn’t care less about. Leno thanked Ferguson for his friendship and especially for not getting involved in the late night controversy. As Leno put it Ferguson never joined “the late night talk show little snippy club”.

The finale wrapped up with a big reveal. Who was it that’s been inside that fake horse costume all these years!? The true identity of Secretariat was made known and you can see it below.

Craig Ferguson reminded viewers that he’s not retiring and that he’s still doing it. And he’ll still be doing it to you.

A robot skeleton sidekick, a fake pantomime horse named Secretariat, a cold open, plus a host who sang his own theme song, stood extremely close to the camera during his monologue and practically laid down during interviews, all made up the Late Late Show with Craig Ferguson and all will be missed.
