Craig Ferguson is taking on all of history with a brand new panel show on History. Deadline announced today that History (formerly known as The History Channel) ordered up half hour series “Join or Die with Craig Ferguson.” The series will get a 16 episode initial run.

Join or Die is not simply a take off on College Humor’s Funny or Die, it’s a direct reference to the quote that inspired all the “or die” quotes, the famous political cartoon published in 1754 by Benjamin Franklin to unite colonists against British rule. Ferguson had the image of the fragmented snake with the caption “Join or Die” tattoo’ed onto his forearm when he became an American citizen in 2008 and soon after gave an impassioned speech about patriotism on the Late Late Show with Craig Ferguson which he hosted from 2005 to 2014.

The new series will feature Ferguson debating historical topics with celebrities and historians answering questions like who was history’s greatest founding father, or what was the biggest presidential campaign flop, or what invention was the greatest game changer in history.

“I’m a huge fan of History and what they do,” said Ferguson, referring to the network. “I’m delighted to be on their schedule and promise that we will have a lot of fun but we will also stick to the truth.”

The series hails from mega-comedy producer Comedy Dynamics as well as Ferguson’s own Green Mountain West and Lionsgate TV.
