Conan sat down with Charlie Rose for an interview on this week on PBS.

When asked about Jimmy Kimmel’s decision to not broadcast on the night of David Letterman’s last broadcast, May 20, Conan joked: “That’s just a lazy excuse. Anything to get a night off.”

Conan also cracked that he planned to “try and take the spotlight away from Dave. This is what comics do… I’m gonna come out on the air. I’ll be naked that night.”

Turning serious, Conan said that he just assumes that night, “No one’s gonna be watching any of us anyway,” referring to Letterman’s competition. He stated that he had a rough idea of how he plans to pay tribute. “What I’d like to do is say something very nice about David Letterman that I think comes from the heart… We come on a little before he does, and then tell people to turn the channel.”

Conan, whose show starts at 11pm, added that he hopes that if he has 9 viewers that night, he can convince at least 8 of them to switch to Dave’s final show, which starts at 11:35pm.
