This may be Tom McCaffrey’s last shot at making it in stand up comedy. He’s approaching 40.  It’s over if he doesn’t make it now.  That’s if you go by Tom, in his new comedy mockumentary that look at the struggle to succeed in the world of stand up.  McCaffrey’s “This Is Comedy” will be part comedy documentary and part comedy mockumentary.  Think of it as the comedy Spinal Tap.  It sure ain’t your grandma’s chronicle of stand-up comedy…if your grandma had a chronicle of stand up comedy.

“This Is Comedy” might be mocku-ish-y, but plenty of real comedians talk about the business. Janeane Garofalo, Jim Gaffigan, Margaret Cho, Aisha Tyler, Ari Shaffir, Kurt Metzger, Michael Che, Godfrey, Sean Patton, Joe DeRosa, Ted Alexandro and more, all add their own perspective on what some people think is the toughest possible business to break into.  Oh and Dick Clark plays a ghost in it too.

Tom is currently crowdfunding “This Is Comedy” on IndieGoGo. If you decide to get into the documentary / mockumentary business with Tom, there’s plenty of rewards to be had. Some of the mad mad perks being offered if you contribute to “This Is Comedy” include a film credit (a mad film credit, son) a keychain,  tickets to Ted’s taping of his next album, and  executive producer  credit with an actual say about the rough cut of the film.  It’s a chance to be part of a film that shows how funny a harsh and cruel business can really be.  Tommy’s banked $3100 so far, but they’re going to need another 6g’s to get this done so if you’ve always dreamed of a future in film production, or a keychain, get moving.

If you don’t know Tom, he’s written and produced for Comedy Central, Funny or Die, and also been featured by The Onion and Huffington Post.  And here’s what he’s saying about the upcoming film: “This is Comedy” is not only informative and insanely funny, it’s also inspiring! It’s for anyone who’s ever had a dream and faced severe adversity pursuing it. It’s about following your heart and staying true to yourself no matter what the cost. It’s about life. It’s about facing your fears head on and having the courage to follow your passion of sleeping with Scarlett Jahansson. In other words; it’s an American story for people of all ages.”
