Comedy Goes Black to Support #BlackLivesMatter Movement
Comedians turned their Instagram feeds black on Tuesday to show united support for the #blacklivesmatter movement with dozens of accounts taking part in the online demonstration as early as midnight, turning to hundreds of accounts by morning. Meanwhile protests continue all over the country in reaction to the death of George Floyd.
The movement began with the music industry calling for “a day to disconnect from work and reconnect with our community.” It’s quickly spreading through other creative communities including comedy and dance. The show of solidarity with black voices seeks to stand up to bigotry, racism and senseless violence.
Participants have been asked not to use the hashtag #blacklivesmatter in their post as the social media blackout is meant to clear the way for important and informative posts to flourish uninterrupted by the usual clutter. Multiple black square posts are also unhelpful as the goal is not to create a stream of all black squares but rather to briefly silence self promotional posts unrelated to the cause, thereby amplifying and elevating black voices. The idea asks that you then keep your feed quiet for the rest of the day, pausing your posts, allowing other voices to dominate user feeds.
