Comedy Central Says The UK Won’t See ‘The Daily Show’ Anymore

Fans of The Daily Show across the pond have said goodbye to Jon Stewart earlier than expected.

Comedy Central’s UK branch made a brief announcement on their website that their channel, Comedy Central Extra, “will no longer broadcast The Daily Show.”

The network provided a brief, but vague explanation: “This is because Comedy Central Extra is currently moving away from talk shows and focusing on other genres of comedy.”

The timing is interesting. Stewart is leaving The Daily Show on August 6th. Trevor Noah will succeed Stewart as host of the Emmy Award-winning program. Comedy Central has not announced a formal start date for Noah’s tenure leading the show. Noah, a native South African, is expected to give The Daily Show a more international perspective. Barring a change, however, UK audiences will not see this global perspective on the re-tooled Daily Show.

It is unlikely the move has to do with the shift in the host chair. Noah is tremendously popular in the UK. He has toured regularly as a stand-up comedian, performing in huge venues throughout his career. Starting September 22, Noah is set to perform across Great Britain once again, with 18 announced dates at major theaters as part of his Trevor Noah: Lost in Translation tour.
