Over the course of seven years, Chelsea Handler became a major player in the late night talk game, launched careers of dozens of comedians, and scored legions of fans with her series Chelsea, Lately. When she decided she was done in 2014, everyone was surprised.  When she very quickly announced a deal with Netflix, everyone understood- she was leaving to pursue another opportunity– but we were still pretty fuzzy on the details.  How do you do a late night show on Netflix? Will they be live?  What kind of format will there be?  It’s still pretty confusing, especially since Netflix doesn’t release shows one episode at a time.  Many of these questions remain unanswered, but as the premiere date of the show, May 11 gets closer, we’re learning a little bit more.

Last night on the Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon, Chelsea explained what she’s trying to do with her Netflix show, and some of the mini documentaries that she’s been releasing. By the way, if you believe her, she doesn’t exactly know what’s coming either.

“I’m just so excited about it because I don’t know what it is yet either,” she said, as but explained it as 60 Minutes if 60 Minutes was a funny show.  “I’m basically treating it like a college education that I forgot to get that Netflix is funding. It’s what you would want college to be once you turn 40 and realize what you’re actually interested in, what you think you know that you don’t know, getting answers to questions but also keeping my sense of humor about everything so you can get information in a fun cool way.”

She and Fallon talked about some of what Chelsea has already done with Netflix through the documentaries and other projects, like Chelsea’s dinner parties including a Captain America dinner party, and a parenting dinner party, putting together different people and having them drink and talking about a topic.  “I just like to put different people together and have them in my home and drink. its just a more interesting way to engage people,” she said, adding, “I don’t want to hear about Batman anymore. I want Batman to take a long hike.”

Chelsea’s new show debuts on May 11, on Netflix and will air three nights a week, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday.
