#BlackMonday: Da Bears Fire Both Da Coach And Da GM

mrcIf you want to know how former Montreal Alouettes coach Marc Trestman’s tenure in Chicago went, his statement from yesterday (courtesy Chicago Tribune) should sum it up:

“I don’t have to go into the reasons that I expect to be back. I couldn’t look at it any other way or with any other kind of focus. My plan is to continue to finalize my notes now that the season is over and make sure that if the opportunity arises, I’ll be able to explain how we fix this thing…And putting my thoughts down, I don’t think there’s anybody in a better position to assess it other than myself or [GM] Phil [Emery].”

Today, he and Phil got their asses fired.

After three seasons as General Manager, Phil Emery was let go after an 23-25 record. After one 10-6 season with Lovie Smith, Emery fired him in favor of Marc Trestman. That hire was probably his most confusing decision: nothing against the CFL (Who doesn’t love the rouge?), but no one hires Grey Cup winners for a reason. Trestman managed an 8-8 season after replacing Smith, but finished a deceptive 5-11 this season, playing so poorly that Jay Cutler was replaced by Jimmy Clausen (Smokin’ Jay returned as starter due to injury). Defense wasn’t that good, either, as the Bears gave up 50+ points in back-to-back games against the Pats and Pack.
