“Birdman”, the dark comedy about a washed up comic book hero movie actor trying to find professional redemption, earned Oscar wins for Best Picture, Best Original Screenplay and Best Director, but nothing for its star. Alejandro Inarritu accepted those three Oscars during the 87th annual Academy Awards. The film however was shut out in the acting categories. Michael Keaton, a strong favorite to win Best Actor for “Birdman” lost to Eddie Redmayne from “The Theory of Everything”. Emma Stone and Edward Norton were also nominated for “Birdman” in the supporting acting categories, but both lost out. Nominated for 9 Oscars, “Birdman” took home four overall, including Best Cinematography.
The other big comedy winner at the 2015 Oscars was Wes Anderson’s “The Grand Budapest Hotel”. The film was also nominated for 9 Academy Awards and tied with “Birdman” with 4 wins at the ceremony. Director Wes Anderson lost to “Birdman” in the directing and Best Picture competition, but went home with Oscars for Best Costume Design, Best Hairstyling and Make Up, Best Production Design and Best Original Score. Although Wes Anderson didn’t make any Oscar speeches personally, the artists that won for his film sang his praises and he was equally excited in the audience.
Steve Carell who was nominated for Best Actor for the film, “Foxcatcher” also lost out to Eddie Redmayne. And Paul Thomas Anderson, whose comedy “Inherent Vice” was up for two Oscars, went home empty handed.
