Bill Maher Offends Muslims And One Direction Fans

As if One Direction fans weren’t hurting enough over band member Zayn Malik leaving the group. Now Real Time’s Bill Maher has hurt the “Directioners” feelings by making a joke comparing Zayn to accused Boston Marathon bomber Dzhokhar Tsarnaev. “Real Time” wasn’t even on HBO this week and Maher still found himself being criticized over a joke. Maher made the comment in a web exclusive “New Rule” video that was posted online while the show was off . Bill Maher said in the video, “Just tell me two things, Zayn. Which one in the band were you? And where were you during the Boston Marathon?” He then juxatposed similar looking photos next to each other showing the accused terrorist and Zayn Malik who is also a Muslim.
One Direction fans as well as Muslim organizations were coming after Maher on Twitter over the joke. Ibrahim Hooper, the spokesperson for Council on American-Islamic Relations told People magazine that Bill Maher’s comments only fuel bigotry against Islam. He said, “It shows that he’s really not missing an opportunity to engage in his Islamaphobic themes. He serves to legitimize Islamaphobia in the left which is one of the unfortunate byproducts of his intolerance of Islam and Muslims.”
This isn’t the first time that Bill Maher has been accused of promoting Islamaphobia. Maher and Ben Affleck went back and forth over the issue with Affleck accusing Maher of racism and stereotyping Muslims.
“Real Time with Bill Maher” returns this Friday with a new episode at 10pm et on HBO.
