Bill Hader Trying to Save a Cultural Treasure

Filmstruck is closing down later this month, and Bill Hader hopes you will help him to change that.

For those who don’t know, Filmstruck was one of the best streaming services available online, housing a collection of Turner Classic Movies and the Criterion Collection on demand.  Those who find Filmstruck fall in love with it.  At the IndieWire Honors ceremony Hader made a plea, calling the service his favorite thing on earth.  “I know there’s a lot bigger fish to fry right now in the world, but…in my little kingdom, if we can save Filmstruck, that would be awesome.”

Filmstruck shuts down officially on November 29th but for those who aren’t already subscribers, you’re already too late. They have stopped accepting new sign-ups in anticipation of closing down.

Hader and 30,000 plus change.org petition signers are upset because the streaming service was a haven for film buffs in the know.  Full of rare,  hard to see independent film and soon to be forgotten classics, the service has only been around for 2 years now, but has garnered a loyal following. It’s home to over 1600 films. As the petition on change.org explains, “a master team of curators and presenters,” have showcased films “that will likely never find a home on any other streaming platform, with incredible “Star of the Week” and “Director of the Week” selections, exploring the cinema of genres and movements around the world, and, most recently, they’ve curated invaluable series of films directed by women and LGBT filmmakers.”

We regret to inform you that FilmStruck will be shutting down. Our last day of service will be November 29, 2018, and we are currently no longer enrolling new subscribers.

Guillermo del Toro is also hoping to get parent company Warner Brothers to change their mind about shutting down the service.

It was a pricier service than some others, it cost you $20 a month to see curated classics like all three prior versions of “A Star is Born”,  “Seven Samurai”, “Withnail and I”, “Naked,”, “Gimme Shelter”, “Blood Simple”, “Breathless”, a long list of classic or foreign films most of you never heard of, and plenty of great comedies, like “His Girl Friday”, “City Lights”, and “My Favorite Year.”

So for those who love this service like it was the last life raft on the Titanic, for those of us who never got the chance to pay $20 a month for classic film, and for Bill Hader, please #savefilmstruck.
