Fresh off his recent press tour with Bobcat Goldthwait promoting the brilliant film “Call Me Lucky” Barry Crimmins has announced that he is going on tour again, this time performing stand up. This is great news for so many people who have never had the experience of seeing Crimmins perform, especially those who only recently discovered Barry through Bobcat’s film.

“Call Me Lucky” has been getting standing ovations, and outstanding reviews across the country and new audiences are learning about how Crimmins created the modern Boston comedy scene inspired so many great comics. He’s also a brilliant satirist in his own right, a passionate activist.

Crimmins told us he’s gearing up to do a new special this winter, so he’s hitting up clubs and theaters across the country.  There’s ten dates for now, and he plans to add quite a few more. He said he’d love to add some dates in places like Burlington and Brattleboro Vermont, and Western Mass, New Hampshire, Maine, Madison, Wisconsin, the North West, and Atlanta.  “There’s a lot of irons in the fire, he said, “we’ll see what comes out.”

If you are close enough to one of the stops on Crimmins’ list, you can expect to witness something really special.  Barry compares his comedy to jazz, in that no two shows are ever the same. Like jazz, he says, “you have the basic charts in front of you; you gotta have a game plan before you can abandon it.  But then it can go anywhere.” he said.  With no shortage of material, Barry does indeed go in many different directions, but he says he lets the audience inform him which way to go on any given evening.  “It’s a matter of figuring out what the audience needs,” Barry said. “I generally know why it’s funny to me, but lots of times when you get out there, …the audience sort of tells you. It’s sort of telepathy. You figure out what they need. And then you come up with that one line and that ends up being the whole bit. And the other stuff just gets cast away like a jetisoned space craft. ”

Barry’s material is certainly progressive, but never predictable, and plays well all over the country, not just on the coasts.  “It’s like a Berlin Airlift. I like to play places where they’re not expecting me. They’re relieved,  like ‘wow, he said that!’ I would rather play a labor hall in Little Rock, Arkansas than some club with a bunch of jaded people in D.C. or something.”  There are no merch tables at a Crimmins show– he says its just as well because he’d probably end up just giving it away– and there are no rules or formulas. If you really want to know what to expect, just expect to be entertained, and hopefully somewhat enlightened.
