Andrew Dice Clay Cries! Reveals His Kryptonite.
“No matter what anyone says, the tough guys are the most sensitive.”
Andrew Dice Clay taped an episode of Unmasked with Ron Bennington in front of a studio audience. The episode premiered today on Bennington’s “Ron and Fez Show” on SiriusXM’s Raw Dog Channel and Dice proved he can still hold an audience whether he’s doing parts of his act, revealing behind the scenes stories or getting sentimental. Dice isn’t normally known for public sentiment, but after over an hour of talking from the heart about his career, old friends, and rivalries, Dice broke down while talking about some of the great comedians we lost this year and in recent years, like Robin Williams and Joan Rivers. He called them real performers, referring to their stagemanship.
Dice had been talking about his friend and rival Sam Kinison (more on that here), obviously an emotional subject for him when the conversation turned to great performers who we’ve lost in recent years. Dice becomes incredibly emotional for several intense minutes. “These were all…no matter what happened…they made the world laugh, and no matter what I went through with any of them, they were the best, on stage,” he said, and then needing a moment as his voice cracked, and he choked back tears.
You can be the toughest guy but I always looked at sensitivity as my kryptonite.
He spoke about what those comedians meant to him- and the world. “You know, Robin……he gave the world everything. Joan, Carlin. All these guys. Dice also brought up his sons who were in the audience during the interview. “And it’s like I’ll say to my own boys — who in my opinion are going to stop traffic one day with their band, LA Rocks, — and I gotta plug while I’m crying, it’s hysterical. They’re actually going to be playing with me, at Westbury on the 30th of January, opening for me. They’re playing since they’re kids and they talk to me about all of this” he told the audience.
That’s when Dice took the opportunity to say why comedy matters so much to him, and why it doesn’t make sense to worry about being politically correct. “That’s why when I see anyone with the PC shit whether its guys like me, or Kevin Hart,” he said, “People need this. People want to laugh hard. They come see me if they want it down and dirty or over the top. Seinfeld, the greatest clean comic on earth- nobody picks apart a bit like Seinfeld. Sam was rebellious no matter what I’m saying about him, that’s why I said I could go in and watch him no matter how I felt about him because everybody needs to laugh including me.”
