Amy Schumer Drops Out of ‘Barbie’

Back in December, it was reported that comedian Amy Schumer had been recruited to star in the live action Barbie film, as well as contribute in the writers’ room. If you thought that was too weird/amazing to be true, you were right. Now, Schumer has announced that a scheduling conflict is forcing her to back out of the film.

“Sadly, I’m no longer able to commit to Barbie due to scheduling conflicts,” Schumer said in a statement to Variety. “The film has so much promise, and Sony and Mattel have been great partners. I’m bummed, but look forward to seeing Barbie on the big screen.”

Production was set to begin this summer, but Schumer’s full schedule ultimately disqualified her from the project. On top of upcoming filming for her role in the new Rebecca Miller dramedy She Came to Me, Schumer is also about to embark on a promotional tour for her new film, Snatched, in which she stars opposite Goldie Hawn. Once you also factor in her daily bath in a tub full of money, there’s little time for much else.

The Barbie film has now lost its only star, and is still searching for a director. There’s no hard feeling from Sony, however.

“We respect and support Amy’s decision,” Sony said in a statement. “We look forward to bringing Barbie to the world and sharing updates on casting and filmmakers soon.”
