Guess Who is Going to Play Barbie!?

Deadline is reporting that Amy Schumer will play the iconic children’s figure Barbie for a live action blockbuster children’s movie. Schumer will collaborate on the script which has been initially penned by Hillary Winston. It’s an interesting choice on both sides because although Barbie has always claimed to stand for female empowerment, the children’s favorite has often been criticized for being the embodiment of misogynistic ideals including the objectification of women, unrealistic body typing, and promoting the stereotypes that women are more interested in fashion and appearance than substance. Mattel has made efforts to break out of that image over the years.
Schumer has been an ardent opponent of objectification and female body shaming, and has chosen to be loud and proud about her body at many different sizes, posing nude, or in a bikini or in her underwear for social media, magazines, and even her book cover.
Her character in the Barbie movie will share her same ideals, according to Deadline. The current storyline, which is still in flux, places Schumer’s character living in Barbieland, but kicked out because she’s not perfect enough. Throughout the course of the movie, her character learns to look inward for perfection, and sees the key to happiness as believing in herself.
It’s unclear whether Schumer will actually play “Barbie.” From all descriptions of the movie so far, we know that her character lives in Barbieland, and that she is the star of the movie, but Deadline, which released the exclusive, stopped short of saying she is playing the title character. Sony Pictures plans a Spring 2018 release.
