Earlier this month we wrote about a new comedy competition in the works at FOX but on Friday came the news that NBC is also gearing up for a new contest for all kinds of comedians, and they’re teaming up with Just for Laughs to do it.
Titled, “Bring the Funny,” the series promises to feature the world’s best comedic acts but unlike Last Comic Standing, the show plans to embrace every style of comedy performance in one competition. “Bring the Funny” will feature the best of the best stand-ups, sketch troupes and comedic variety acts of all ages 13 and up. From solo comics to sketch troupes to musicians, magicians, podcasters, puppeteers, YouTubers and more — anyone who can make audiences laugh will have the chance to receive the career-changing $250,000 prize package and see their name in lights in the Bring the Funny showcase. Based on the information released so far, it sounds like Americas Got Talent but without the music and dance acts.
“Great comedians know how to make us laugh while serving as a reflection of the times, and we are excited to embrace and support the myriad of ways funny people bring us levity and humor today,” said Meredith Ahr, President, Alternative and Reality Group, NBC Entertainment. “Kenan, Chrissy, Jeff and Amanda are not only hilarious, but are pioneers in their respective arenas and understand what it takes to have longevity and breadth in this industry. They, along with our partners at Just for Laughs, will be an insightful resource for the talent that takes our stage.”
Rising stand up star Amanda Seales is getting a giant break hosting the new reality competition, and judging the competitors will be Jeff Foxworthy, Kenan Thompson and Chrissy Teigen. Seales has been ready for a break out moment for a few years now and in 2018 seemed all but ready to burst onto the American mainstream public. This could be the project that puts her over the top.
The series is looking for an acts across all ages and walks of life. For those interested in competing in “Bring the Funny,” visit https://bringthefunnycasting.com/. Must be age 13 or older, eligibility requirement apply.
Last Comic Standing ran on NBC for nine seasons and was never officially cancelled.
