Yesterday was Ghostbusters Day, exactly 32 years from the date of the original film’s release, June 8, 1984, and Jimmy Kimmel celebrated with a double shot of Ghostbuster superstars in not one– but two separate time slots.  It was a true Ghostbusters celebration, with Ray Parker Jr. showing up to perform the Ghostbusters theme songs, there were extended clips from the movie, and stories from the sets.  It was a lot of fun, but of course there wasn’t nearly enough time for Kimmel to get into any real conversations with the cast members, but it was still a fun watch.

Kimmel brought out the amazing comedy superstars of the brand new all-female Ghostbusters reboot for a special pre-NBA finals half hour episode.  Kristen Wiig, Melissa McCarthy, Kate McKinnon and Leslie Jones joined Kimmel for the prime time special.  Kate McKinnon talked about driving the Ectomobile, and the cast shared what it was like filming in secrecy on a secret location in Massachusetts just outside of Boston.

Everyone had their chance to shine but Leslie Jones absolutely dominated the first half hour.  Jones is ready to be a star.  We already knew she was funny, we already knew she could act, and now you can see she’s got the talk show personality to wrap the package up, so America make room. And she’s single boys. If you’re interested in riding along the Leslie Jones runaway train, here are some tips.   She said she has had enough of the single life, and her co-star Kristen Wiig taught her the secret to finding her perfect man, so she wrote a list of what she’s looking for in a man. Wiig believes that if you put what you want on paper, you are getting it out there in the universe, and it will be easier to obtain.  Jones’ list is four pages long, and includes qualities like good kisser, good breath, nice teeth- not perfect.  She’s not asking for too much in the ‘downstairs’ department, but boys she expects you to be circumcised, and functioning…..all the time.

The women discussed the anger and fuss about an all female reboot. McCarthy brushed aside the complaints, saying everyone who is complaining is still living at home with their moms telling them they have to take the trash out.  Kimmel closed out the prime time half hour bringing out some very special guests- the original cast- Dan Aykroyd, Bill Murray, Ernie Hudson and Annie Potts.  There were hugs and kisses all around- some right on the mouth- and the show adjourned till very late late night after the game.

Last night’s late night version of Jimmy Kimmel Live turned out to be a very late night edition.  After the game- after the news- Kimmel came back with both casts of both Ghostbusters movies.  He asked the girls about first time they saw the original Ghostbusters movie. Only Melissa McCarthy shared her first time, saying she was 14 and immediately obsessed, seeing the film over and over and over.  Kate McKinnon was in utero at the time, but swears she loved it.

The issue about all the internet hate for the movie came up and Bill Murray addressed the issue head on. He says he shunned a lot of reboot ideas, but only agreed to this one because the four leads are such funny women.   He summed up his feelings about the film calling it a home run. “When you see the film, and you’ll delight in the film.  It sort of rumbles along in the beginning and you go, ‘oh God are they gonna pull this thing off?’ he said, pausing for some laughs. He continued. “No really, I feel like  stepfather to the whole thing, you know? There is no quit in these girls. I worked with Melissa before and a little bit with Kris. This is a tough movie to pull off.  Because it’s a big concept. There’s a lot on the plate. There’s a lot of expectation. But Danny and I and Annie and Ernie we were just screaming, cheering like we were at a sporting event at the end of it.” So there you have it.  Ghostbusters opens July 15 across America.

Listen to the theme songs, old and new and watch both casts have a dance party.
