Ali Wong is Making a Netflix Movie With “Fresh Off the Boat” Team
Netflix’s Always Be My Maybe started filming this week in Vancouver, Canada
Netflix announced today that they’ll be releasing a feature film written by and starring Ali Wong and Randall Park who you know as the star of ABC’s “Fresh off the Boat.” Keanu Reeves is also on board as well as comedian Michelle Buteau, Vivian Bang, Karan Soni (Deadpool 2, Miracle Workers), Charlyne Yi (Paper Heart, Second Act), Daniel Dae Kim (Hellboy, The Good Doctor (Executive Producer), Hawaii Five-0, Lost), James Saito, Lyrics Born, Susan Park (Vice Principals, Fargo, Snowpiercer).
Wong stars as Sasha, a celebrity chef opening a restaurant in San Francisco who runs into her childhood sweetheart, Marcus, a happy struggling musician still living at home working for his dad. Ashley Liao and Miya Cech will play Sasha at a younger age; Jackson Geach and Emerson Yin will play Marcus at a younger age; Anaiyah Juliette Bernier and Sasha Zoey Rojen will play Veronica at a younger age.
Fresh Off the Boat creator Nahnatcha Khan will direct the film which was written by Wong, Park, and Michael Golamco. Khan, Wong and Park all worked together on “Fresh Off the Boat” where Wong was a staff writer. Wong has had a close association with Ali- they released her breakout stand up special “Baby Cobra” and the follow up, “Hard Knock Wife.” Ali is also voicing the lead character of Bertie in an animated series “Tuca & Bertie” with co-star Tiffany Haddish for the streaming service.
Netflix is planning a 2019 release.
