ABC Cuts Two Comedies, Renews Others

ABC has canceled first year series “Kevin (Probably) Saves the World”. Jason Ritter starred as the unlikeable Kevin Finn whose selfish ways are causing him much unhappiness when he discovers he has the power to save the world

“The Mayor”, a series about a hip hop artist whose publicity stunt– running for mayor– turns real after he actually wins, was also officially canceled on Friday. This was no surprise as the series last four episodes were yanked from the schedule and replaced with reruns.

But ethnically centered family comedies “Black-ish”, and “Fresh Off the Boat” will be back for a fifth season along with “The Goldbergs”, “Schooled” a spinoff of “The Goldbergs”, “Modern Family” and of course ratings blockbuster “Roseanne”.

Also announced today is the return of “American Housewife”, starring Katy Mixon, for a third season. Set in Westport Connecticut, the show follows a less than perfect wife and mom who is raising her messy family in a town full of perfect families.

“Splitting Up Togetherwill also be back for season two.  The series stars Jenna Fischer and Oliver Hudson as a couple whose romantic flame is rekindled by their divorce.  Bobby Lee is part of the cast along with Diane Farr, Lindsay Price, Olivia Keville, Van Crosby, Sander Thomas, Geoff Pierson, Lucas Near-Verbrugghe and Kelsey Ashville.

The Goldbergs spinoff isn’t the only new comedy coming to the network. “Single Parents” will star SNL alum Taran Killam and Leighton Meester. The show is about single parents raising 7 year olds.
