Eight Celebrities Who Flirted With L. Ron Hubbard

They never committed but these eight  celebrities dipped their toe into the Scientology pool to check it out and almost joined the ranks of Tom Cruise, Leah Remini and other favorites.  What turned them away?  Was Xenu not cute enough?  Too many Thetans? The world may never know.  But don’t say anything bad about L. Ron in front of them.  We all know the first breakup never takes.

* * *

  • Jerry Seinfeld.     Comedian.  Jerry took some  communication classes in Scientology and found them to be helpful in his stand up. He hasn’t a bad thing to say about them and no horror story has come out.
  • Sonny Bono.   Politician and singer.  Some people think that the singer and politician  was deep into Scientology but couldn’t say more for fear of harming his political career . Bono offically stated  “I openly studied Scientology … and then said thank you and left … the Scientology—there was no cult thing there.”
  • Vince “Shamwow” Offer.  The Shamwow Guy.  This may be the best proof that Scientology can offer of not being a ‘cult’ that won’t let people leave.  Scientology booted the sham wow out on his general weirdness.
  • Robert Hunter.   Lyricist for the Grateful Dead. Hunter dabbled in the very early days of Scientology and then went on his way exploring other things.
  • Neil Gaiman.  Author.   Neil allegedly  grew up in a Scientologist household.  His father was the British spokesperson for the organization and his sisters and ex-wife are reportedly all members. Yet Neil denies ever being a Scientologist.
  • John Brodie.  San Francisco QB.   When a  arm injury was unresponsive to treatment Brodie audited some classes and felt completely healed.   He hung around the church for awhile but left  because ” There were many in the church I felt were treated unfairly.”
  • William S. Burroughs.  Author.     Burroughs thought  that while some of Scientology’s therapies are worthwhile, the dogmatic nature of the group and its secrecy are harmful.
  • Jeffrey Tambor.  Even George Bluth sniffed around  the religion a bit.  “I took some Scientology classes at one time, studied Scientology for a while, but no more. I have nothing against it, but I am no longer a Scientologist.  Hey Now!
