Penn State Still Planning On Getting Out Of Its Punishment
Penn State commemorated the one-year anniversary of the Freeh Report by holding a confidential meeting Friday, reportedly held to discuss a proposal to the NCAA to lessen the punishments laid out in the Sandusky scandal. Or, at least it was supposed to be confidential, but they held it in a room with glass doors, which meant the Centre Daily Times’ Mike Dawson was able to see coach Bill O’Brien’s PowerPoint presentation. One slide was titled “potential proposal to modify sanctions” and another referred to the impact of the scholarship reductions. One particular slide stated “Individual lawsuits DO NOT help us!” And at the end of his presentation, O’Brien received a standing ovation. When the meeting convened, O’Brien and other attendees would only say he was there to meet some people, and the subject of the meeting was said to be confidential.
The NCAA says they have not received any proposal from Penn State, and the university has previously said it has implemented 115 of the 119 recommendations in the Freeh Report. The slide that read “Individual lawsuits DO NOT help us!” is no doubt a reference to three suits filed over the NCAA’s punishment: Governor Corbett’s suit which has already been thrown out by a federal judge, one brought by a state senator and treasurer, and, of course, the Paterno’s suit.
