Tony Kanaan Wins Record-Setting Indy 500

milkBrazil’s Tony Kanaan (#11 KV Racing Chevrolet Dallara) has won the 97th Indianapolis 500-Mile Race. It was Kanaan’s first after many heartbreaks in his previous 11 starts, and led the third-highest number of laps by a non-winner before today. A fan favorite for his personality and sense of humor, Kanaan said in Victory Lane, “now I get to put my ugly face on that trophy.” He then held up a medal he had given a sick child in a hospital almost a dozen years ago; the girl had recently given it back to him, telling him he needed it more than she did, and he carried it in today’s 500.
The race was the fastest in history at 187.433mph. It also doubled the previous record in lead changes with 64, among a record-high 14 drivers, over a third of the field.
