Chappelle Regrets His SNL Monologue Comments

In an appearance on CNN’s Van Jones Show, Dave Chappelle said he regrets some of the statements he made when he hosted Saturday Night Live the week after Trump won the election in 2016.
“I think the rhetoric of his presidency is repugnant. I just don’t like the way he talks,” Chappelle said. “We’re living in a time where there’s got to be more cultural sensitivity.” He said that standard applies to himself as well, saying that he listens when people complain. “And as the President of a country that’s as Eclectic as ours…I just think that he’s speaking to a very small choir.”

He still doesn’t like talking bad about the President, he said. But acknowledged that he regretted telling America we gotta give Trump a chance. When asked about whether he had apologized for his SNL monologue comments he said, “Well, I don’t ever apologize,” Chappelle said. “I said I shouldn’t have said that shit.”
Chappelle had ended his 2016 SNL monologue saying, “I’m wishing Donald Trump luck, and I’m going to give him a chance. And we the historically disenfranchised demand…that he give us one too.”
He also discussed Kanye West’s now infamous visit to the White House. He called Kanye a genius, and said he loves and supports him. But that doesn’t mean he agrees with him. “But yeah, he shouldn’t say all that shit.”
