Sarah Silverman: Louis C.K. Talked With Me About My Season One Monologue Addressing Sexual Misconduct

“He called me and he said it really helped one of his daughters to understand. She showed it to him and said, ‘I can love you even though you did bad things.”
Sarah Silverman says she can’t really comment on the question about whether Louis C.K. should be able to return to the stage less than a year after his past sexual misconduct came to light. “I can’t be objective” she said during the Paley Fall TV Preview, while promoting her Hulu show “I Love You America.”
“Things are very black and white if it isn’t someone you love on either side, on any part of it,” she explained. “My heart goes out to him [but] then I have to stop and say, ‘You know what? I think I’m too close to this to be objective.’ Sometimes when you know someone you don’t always know more, you know less.”
Sarah said she couldn’t give a good answer that anyone would be happy with, and that includes her. “The whole thing makes me sad,” she said. Silverman and C.K. have been good friends for years, and said they have spoken since everything came out last fall. She said he called her, and thanked her after her first season episode aired. He said it helped one of his daughters to understand. “He called me and he said it really helped one of his daughters to understand. She showed it to him and said, ‘I can love you even though you did bad things,’” Silverman said.
She’s referring to her opening comments in Episode Six of Season 1, where she addressed the allegations that had been leveled against her longtime friend. “Can you love someone who did bad things?” she asked. “I wish I could sit this one out,” she said at the time, but opted to discuss it, reserving the right to change her opinion as time went forward. She said that he had wielded his power with women in fucked up ways, and said that her past friendship with him was irrelevant. “I love Louis, but Louis did these things.” But at that moment she said, the only thing that matters are the victims. She said she as sad and angry for what he did and for the culture that enabled it. She called this moment in time essential, and said it is vital that people be held accountable. “We will be better,” she said. “I can’t wait to be better.
