Meet Your New TV and Internet Provider: Google

Google announced its newest venture, Google Fiber, which will be their internet and television provider service. Here are the details:

  • For their internet service – there is no bandwidth cap, no overage fees and they’re giving you 1 Terra byte of cloud storage.
  • If you want just their basic internet service, you pay a $300 dollar fee one time and no monthly fees.
  • For Google Fiber Television – You can record up to 500 hours of HD shows. You’ll get all broadcast channels and something Google’s calling “Fiber Channels”.
  • If you get their TV service, you’ll also get their default remote, which is a Google Nexus 7 tablet.
  • Pricing is $120 dollars for the TV and internet bundle. $70 dollars for their high speed internet and, as mentioned above, free for their scaled down, slower, internet service.

The service is only available in Kansas City right now, but you can go to Fiber.Google.Com to pre-register. Google is now in the TV business. Are they becoming too big? Do we want Google to be the one and only company providing all our media, information, and basic gateway to the internet itself?
