Pop Music Really Does Sound All the Same

Researchers in Spain, using a music archive called the Million Song Dataset, and looking at pop music in the last 50 years have found the following:

“…that pop songs have become intrinsically louder and more bland in terms of the chords, melodies and types of sound used. “In particular, we obtained numerical indicators that the diversity of transitions between note combinations – roughly speaking chords plus melodies – has consistently diminished in the last 50 years.”

Are the Spanish researchers super computer’s correct? Is Call Me Maybe just the same damn song as every other pop hit before it, just louder?
