Get a First Glimpse of Jerrod Carmichael’s New Hour

Jerrod Carmichael’s new hour special debuts on HBO on Saturday, March 11. Carmichael taped the hour in December at New York City’s Masonic Temple. It’s his second hour special; his first since he’s attracted the eye of an even broader audience who has seen him on his hit NBC show, The Carmichael Show. Carmichael is a killer on stage and we can’t wait to see 8.
Our own Jeffrey Gurian was at the taping, and caused some scandal in his Monday column when he described a less than perfect performance during the second show. Gurian rarely will write anything bad about a performance, but this time he felt compelled to describe the hour as “the strangest, most unusual performance I’ve ever seen, especially for something being taped for TV.” Gurian wasn’t the only one who commented- others described the performance as disjointed. Oddly enough, Jeffrey’s review didn’t dissuade us from wanting to see the show- it did just the opposite. We’re dying to see it because we all know Carmichael to be an experienced pro, and one of the funniest comics performing today- so it just seems impossible that his hour wouldn’t be great. Early word is that it’s really strong.
Today, HBO released the first promo for Jerrod Carmichael: 8 giving us the first chance to get a glimpse at Carmichael on stage, and it looks great. The first thing we noticed in the promo is that Jerrod appears to be in the center of his audience, surrounded by fans rather than in front of them which is a unique choice. In the promo, Jerrod talks about why it’s exhausting being black, the real motivation behind collecting expensive sneakers, and why Martin Luther King isn’t the black role model who means the most to him. Watch the trailer below, to see who Jerrod chose as meaning more to him.
Jerrod Carmichael: 8 debuts Saturday, March 11 at 10:00 p.m. ET/PT.
