Could Arrested Development Season 5 Go Back In Time?

Tuesday, TV Line floated the exciting rumor that season 5 of Arrested Development could bring a lot of new cast members because there may be substantial flashbacks featured throughout the season. Calling it a “major prequel element” TV Line said that a source has told them the flashbacks will feature “much younger versions” of the primary cast. According to TV Line, Arrested Development will not follow the Wet Hot American Summer model of having older actors playing their younger selves– the younger Bluths (and friends) will be played by different actors.
The plot device could help with the difficult problem of scheduling an all-star cast of Jeffrey Tambor, Jessica Walter, Jason Bateman, Will Arnett, Tony Hale, David Cross, Michael Cera, Alia Shawkat, and Portia de Rossi. Netflix’s Arrested Development Season Four handled that problem by creating episodes that focused on subsets of the cast.
Netflix has not confirmed or commented on the rumor and TV Line says that the plan is far from concrete, it’s still in the development stage, and may not happen at all. The only confirmed information on AD5 is that the long awaited season will have 17 new episodes. Production is not set to begin until this summer.
