Alabama football fans and rivals were riled up after SNL’s “Science Sketch” addressed the academic preferential treatment for football fans. In the sketch, host John Cena from the WWE, played a Crimson Tide football player with a bad accent who was getting preferential treatment from an academic panel of professors grading his science project. The other science students (Mikey Day and Vanessa Bayer) in the sketch did projects involving Quantum Entanglement in Paired Particles and Ionization in the Gas Phase while Cena’s dumb jock did a report on bananas. His report which gained high praise from the panel included bananas simply nailed to a board (one of them was an orange) and watching a cartoon banana dance. The football player scored an 100% on his science project while the other two students got low grades and the academic panel’s scorn.

In Alabama, there may not be anything more important than college football and ‘Bama’s national championships, so it was a huge insult to some Tide fans on Twitter who hold their university and its team with coach Nick Saban close to their hearts. And like the New York Yankees in baseball, there’s a national resentment in the country towards Alabama simply because they always win. To see them taken down a peg on SNL was music to a lot of college football fans’ ears. Especially in the South’s SEC territory where teams are forced to face the mighty Crimson Tide every season.
