Amy Schumer Not Happy With Glamour Magazine, Says She’s Not Plus Size

Tuesday afternoon Amy Schumer posted a photo on Instagram showing a portion of the latest cover of Glamour Magazine. The cover spotlights “Women who Inspire Us” and list Melissa McCarthy, Adele, Amy Schumer, and Ashley Graham, and Schumer isn’t happy about it. It’s not that Amy doesn’t want to be labeled inspiring– its more that she doesn’t think she belongs in that group of women.
“I think there’s nothing wrong with being plus size,” she wrote. “Beautiful healthy women. Plus size is considered size 16 in America. I go between a size 6 and an 8. @glamourmag put me in their plus size only issue without asking or letting me know and it doesn’t feel right to me. Young girls seeing my body type thinking that is plus size? What are your thoughts? Mine are not cool glamour not glamourous.”
Although Schumer is never called ‘plus size’, the issue of the magazine was considered a bonus “plus size” issue. The cover, seen above, however, says “Chic at Any Size,” so its up for debate whether the magazine was actually calling Schumer plus sized.
The comment section of Schumer’s instagram turned ugly, with some accusing Schumer of lying about her size, and others angry with Schumer for assuming that the inspired list was meant to be a list of plus sized women. One commenter, beachlifebum said “They never called you plus sized though. Is it because you were grouped with other women that aren’t a size 0 on the cover? Otherwise I don’t get it.” Instagram user lexx orie accused Schumer of deflating her size and asked the comic to keep it real. “I love everything you stand for but in my opinion you are not a size 6 or 8… Beyoncé, Jennifer Lopez, and Sofia Veregara wear a 6. Keep it real..that’s why we like you!”
After receiving some varied reactions from fans and media, Schumer tweeted, “Thanks for sharing your thoughts everyone except the people who told me what I “should feel” or what I “should have focused on” ?” and “Bottom line seems to be we are done with these unnecessary labels which seem to be reserved for women,” along with a video of Amy running on a beach in a bikini.
Glamour did respond to Schumer in a statement, published on CNN.com, saying that Schumer’s inclusion was not due to her size, but rather her strong message of body image positivity. They mentioned that they included women of all sizes in the issue, not only plus sized women. The statement read, “First off, we love Amy, and our readers do too — which is why we featured her on the cover of Glamour last year. The cover line on this special edition — which is aimed at women size 12 and up — simply says ‘Women Who Inspire Us,’ since we believe her passionate and vocal message of body positivity IS inspiring, as is the message of the many other women, of all sizes, featured. “The edition did not describe her as plus-size. We are sorry if we offended her in any way.”
Thanks for sharing your thoughts everyone except the people who told me what I "should feel" or what I "should have focused on" ?
