Is There Really a Friends Reunion Happening!?

Media outlets everywhere are reporting about a gigantic television moment- an impending reunion of the cast of Friends scheduled for later this month. The news reportedly broke during the Television Critics Association Tour earlier today. Now, of course we weren’t there- and there isn’t an official press release but from what we’re gathering from the various sources, the Friends reunion isn’t a certainty yet.
Before you Friends superfans get too excited, Jennifer Anniston, Matt LeBlanc, Courtney Cox, Lisa Kudrow and David Schwimmer will not be getting together for a big Prime Time Friends reunion. They’ll be reuniting during an NBC prime time special paying tribute director James Burrows. Still, since this will be the first time the entire cast will be together since the show ended in 2004, it’s still a big deal, but even that is still an “if”.
While NBC confirmed that all six castmembers will appear on the special, whether they will all be together is a different question. “I shouldn’t go into detail,” entertainment chief Bob Greenblatt said in response to a question about whether there really will be a reunion of Friends castmates during the special. “I’m hoping that all six of them will be there in the same room at the same time. I don’t know, logistically, if we can pull that off.”
Whether that still counts as a reunion is up to you to decide.
What we do know is that the special will celebrate Burrows who has directed 1,000 episodes of television including over a dozen episodes of Friends. Surviving members of the casts of other series like Cheers, Frasier, Taxi and Will and Grace will also participate.
The two hour special will be taped in January and air Sunday February 21st.
