National Film Registry Selects 25 Films For Preservation

Edison Kinetoscopic Record of a Sneeze In March 1894, “Harper's Weekly” magazine published a sequence of still images taken from this two-second film featuring Edison engineer Fred Ott sneezing. The full 81 frames were never seen as a movie until 2013, when the Library of Congress made a 35mm film version. Courtesy Library of Congress.

Each year the Librarian of Congress selects 25 motion pictures that are “culturally, historically or aesthetically” significant. The board requires films to be at least 10 years old and “encourages the preservation of film on film,” rather than employing digital technologies. This year included classics including Ghostbusters, Top Gun, L.A. Confidential, The Shawshank Redemption and even a video of a man sneezing in 1894! Can’t wait for 25 years from now when they’re preserving vines.
