Are The Packers As Dirty As Everyone Else?
The Green Bay Packers have a lovely small-town image: publicly owned, original stadium, historic franchise, and everything else that’s good and marketable. But as anyone who grew up in a small town will tell you, there’s always skeletons in the closet. And according to a couple of reporters at the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, that might be the case at Lambeau Field.
John Diedrich and Michael Cohen, a journalist in his mid-20’s at the paper, wrote an in-depth piece about Packers defensive lineman Letroy Guion that was published last Sunday. Having been arrested last winter with almost a pound of marijuana, a gun, and nearly $200k in cash, a review of about six years worth of court papers showed several domestic violence allegations, including a claim that he punched the mother of his child in the jaw. One of Cohen’s veteran colleagues, Bob McGinn, reported that coach Mike McCarthy’s response to the story was the word “garbage,” and then detailed an incident involving Cohen and Rob Davis, director of player engagement, at the practice facility:
When Cohen was looking down at his roster taking player attendance, Davis came over and placed his head about a foot from Cohen’s head. Startled, Cohen introduced himself to Davis and extended his hand.
“No, we haven’t met,” said Davis, refusing to shake Cohen’s hand. “And I don’t want to know you.”
…Davis, a one-time bouncer for Dennis Rodman, is part of the team’s inner circle and a first contact for players, wives and girlfriends on all types of issues. One interpretation is Davis bullied Cohen, and in a league with many anti-bullying initiatives his actions were regrettable, to say the least.
McGinn reported the paper made the details available to the team a month prior, but the team declined comment. He also detailed other questionable signings besides Guion’s, which involved players with records of assault, cocaine, codeine, firearms, and even a claim that Sandy Hook was a conspiracy. Damn, who knew “The Cowboys Way” and “The Packers Way” would be the same damn way?
