Comedian Wins Presidential Election in Guatemala

Comedian Jimmy Morales will be the next President of Guatemala. He beat his opposition- the former first lady of the country, in a landslide yesterday. He has no experience in government whatsoever, but given the corruption and scandal that ousted the last President, that’s just fine with the people who elected him.
“As president I received a mandate, and the mandate of the people of Guatemala is to fight against the corruption that is consuming us. God bless and thank you,” Mr Morales said in his victory speech. His primary platform (and campaign slogan) was simple- he wasn’t a thief.
Most of his experience comes from a 14-year run on a sketch comedy show,Moralejas, often playing dopey characters, which may be why some of his policies sound comedic (like tagging teachers with GPS to make sure they show up for class). According to the Washington Post, he’s played “bumbling drunks, spies, gangsters, a toga-wearing Socrates, even a blackface character with an Afro wig and a painted white mouth.”
